AI Week took place from 27 to 31 March: a whole week of conferences and workshops to discover the impact and potential of digital technologies on society, on our private and professional lives, now and in the future.

It is in this context that last Friday, our colleagues Hélène Morel and Eric Auquière introduced, in collaboration with IMEC and FARI, the AI TEF (Test & Experimentation Facility for Smart Cities & Communities) project, nicknamed Citcom.ai.

The aim of this project is to create eleven testing and experimentation sites. One of them will be in Brussels.

In the Brussels-Capital Region, an AI test and research center will be created which will allow SMEs, start-ups, public administrations and European research centers to test and validate their (AI-Driven) innovative solutions in the field of multi-modal mobility on a test bed of massive, interoperable and quality data. The data will come from Brussels public operators (amongst them STIB and Bruxelles Mobilité) but also from private companies or other public operators. They will be made accessible and swappable via Data Spaces at local, national and European levels.

The innovations and algorithms that will be tested and validated in the TEF will also be tested for their compliance with EU legislation (GDPR, AI Act, Data Act) and Ethical AI.

Paradigm, STIB, Brussels Mobility and FARI are the project participants for the Brussels-Capital Region. The other Belgian partners are IMEC, Digitaal Vlaanderen and the city of Mechelen.

This 5-year project is co-financed by the EU Commission and started in February 2023.
